Amazon Invests in Nuclear Energy for Data Centers

Amazon has become the latest technology giant to deploy nuclear reactors for powering data centers, signing three agreements to develop small modular reactor (SMR) technology. Through these agreements, the company will participate in four advanced SMR development projects with Energy Northwest, a Washington-based public utility consortium. According to the European Commission's energy division, SMRs can range in size from one-tenth to one-quarter the dimensions of conventional nuclear power plants. These characteristics allow them to require less cooling capacity, be deployed in smaller spaces, and be factory-assembled and modularly installed at alternative locations with ease.

Amazon's SMRs will initially generate approximately 320 megawatts of capacity, with an option to expand to 960 megawatts. According to Amazon's announcement on October 16, this amount could meet the energy needs of more than 770,000 homes in the United States. Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman stated, "Nuclear is a safe, carbon-free energy source that can power our operations and meet our customers' growing demand. It also helps us achieve our Climate Pledge target of reaching net-zero carbon operations by 2040."

The company also plans to use a nuclear facility to power a new data center to be built in Pennsylvania, and has signed an agreement with Virginia utility company Dominion Energy to develop SMR technology near an existing nuclear power plant.

On October 14, Google took a similar step, signing an agreement with California-based Kairos Power to develop small nuclear reactors for generating electricity for artificial intelligence data centers. Weeks earlier, Microsoft announced it had signed an agreement to purchase energy from the Three Mile Island nuclear facility in Pennsylvania to power its own data centers.
