Amazon has partnered with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to offer customers doorstep return pickup capabilities. The pilot program was rolled out in select regions during summer months and aims to streamline the e-commerce giant's return process, making it faster and more convenient.

Amazon has launched a new partnership with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to provide customers with a more convenient return experience. Through this collaboration, users will be able to use the doorstep pickup option to return eligible products from their homes.


According to a company spokesperson, the system, which was piloted during the summer months, is currently active for select customers. While Amazon has not disclosed details about the service's full scope, the company stated that the system aims to increase customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.


The USPS pickup service requires customers to box and label the package they wish to return. Subsequently, a postal worker picks up the package directly from the customer's address, eliminating the need for the customer to visit a store or shipping location.


Third Person CEO Matthew Hertz announced in a LinkedIn post that this option is active for his own Amazon order in the Nashville, Tennessee area. Hertz noted that the return process was completed "free of charge, boxed, and labeled."


A New Revenue Stream for USPS

The U.S. Postal Service, seeking to overcome its longstanding financial challenges, is turning toward the reverse logistics market. According to a report published in 2024 by the Office of Inspector General, USPS processed 132 million return packages in fiscal year 2023 and generated $665 million in revenue from these operations.


The report states, "Given the growth in the reverse logistics market, USPS has opportunities to expand its market share and increase revenue in this area." This demonstrates that e-commerce returns have become a strategic growth area for postal services.


Through this partnership with Amazon, USPS aims to directly generate revenue from rising return volumes and make more effective use of its logistics network.


Amazon's Return Ecosystem Expands

Amazon already offers customers various return methods:

  • Label-free and box-free returns at Staples, Whole Foods Market, and The UPS Store locations,

  • Easy dropoff through more than 8,000 drop-off points within a 5-mile access distance,

  • Now, doorstep return pickup service via USPS.

An Amazon spokesperson stated, "Four out of every five customers in the U.S. can access at least one return point within 5 miles. Now we're adding the doorstep pickup option to that," the company said.


This new model carries strategic importance, particularly as preparation for the busy post-holiday return period. According to a report prepared by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Happy Returns, 17% of sales made during the 2025 holiday season are expected to be returned. This rate exceeds the annual average return rate of 15.8%.


Consequently, the USPS partnership is part of Amazon's comprehensive strategy to alleviate peak-season return volume pressure, prevent bottlenecks in its logistics network, and offer customers more flexible options.
