Amazon Places UK's Largest Ever Order for Electric Trucks

Amazon has placed the United Kingdom's largest-ever order for electric heavy-duty vehicles, aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of its delivery operations across the country. The company plans to add more than 140 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 and eight Volvo FM Electric trucks to its fleet over the next 18 months, in addition to its existing fleet of nine electric heavy-duty vehicles.

The order is part of Amazon's £300 million green transport investment announced in 2022, which includes a target of 700 electric heavy-duty vehicles by 2025. However, the transition to electric heavy-duty vehicles across the sector is slowing due to inadequate public infrastructure, high costs, and range concerns. According to the Road Haulage Association, only 300 of the UK's 500,000-strong truck fleet are electric.

To overcome these challenges, Amazon is installing rapid charging stations across its network in the United Kingdom. These charging devices can charge truck batteries from 20 percent to 80 percent in just over an hour, enabling faster turnarounds.

Additionally, Amazon is taking steps to transport its parcels by trains and pedestrian deliveries. The company loads its products from warehouses onto cargo trains running on the fully electrified West Coast Main Line between Scotland and the Midlands. This initiative will enable 20 million items per year to be transported by rail. Previously, Amazon only transported small quantities of parcels via cars attached to passenger trains.

In central London, Amazon has launched new pedestrian deliveries and is running pilot programmes in Hackney, Westminster, and Islington. The programme uses heavy carts that can be restocked while in transit, helping the company reduce van journeys in the capital's congestion charge zone. Amazon covers more than 70 percent of the area with deliveries using electric vans and e-cargo bikes operated by its partners. The company is expanding electric deliveries in UK city centres by adding to existing Amazon fleets in London, Manchester, and Glasgow, along with the introduction of electric cargo bikes in Belfast and Norwich.

Nicola Fyfe, Vice President of Logistics for Europe at Amazon, said: "Reducing carbon emissions from our transport network is key to achieving our goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions in our operations by 2040, and today's announcement represents an exciting and important step in this mission."
