NKT and TenneT Sign $1 Billion Cable Deal in Germany
Danish offshore cabling specialist NKT has signed an agreement with transmission system operator TenneT worth approximately 1 billion euros ($1.04 billion) for two turnkey projects in Germany. These projects are part of TenneT's 2GW Programme, which aims to support Europe's energy transition.
The agreement is part of a multi-year framework agreement signed in 2023 and running until 2028, with an extension option through 2031. Under this scope, NKT has taken on a total of five projects.
NKT will provide design, engineering, manufacturing, and onshore and offshore installation services for 525 kV XLPE high-voltage direct current (HVDC) land and submarine power cable systems. These projects will facilitate the efficient transport of wind energy from the North Sea to the terrestrial grid, contributing to Europe's energy transition.
The first project, LanWin7, features a route of approximately 320 kilometers and will connect to a multi-terminal hub in Pöschendorf, Schleswig-Holstein. This hub will integrate multiple direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) connections, enabling the efficient transport of wind energy from the North Sea to the terrestrial grid.
The second project, NordOstLink, includes a land route of approximately 65 kilometers. This project involves the installation of additional cables to increase the network's capacity and flexibility.
Under the agreement, contracts are scheduled to be commissioned in 2026-2027, with projects to be completed in 2033-2034. Claes Westerlind, President and CEO of NKT, said, "Applying our power cable technology to these two additional projects in Germany will enable the efficient transport of wind energy from the North Sea to the terrestrial grid, facilitating Europe's energy transition."
These projects are of major significance for the modernization of Europe's energy infrastructure and the integration of renewable energy sources. Germany, in particular, is aiming to increase the share of renewable energy sources in its energy transition process, and such projects play a critical role in achieving these goals.
NKT is reinforcing its leading position in the high-voltage cable market through such strategic projects, while its partnership with TenneT contributes to Europe's energy transition objectives. These projects will also enhance energy supply security across Europe, enabling more efficient utilization of renewable energy sources.
