The Port Authority of Valencia is advancing its marine renewable energy integration through participation in the European Union-funded RENMARINAS DEMOS project, an initiative supporting research, development and innovation in marine renewable energy technologies. The project promotes sustainable clean energy use in the maritime sector, contributing to decarbonisation and improved energy efficiency across port operations.

The authority has launched a tender for the design, supply and installation of two electrical power evacuation systems. The first system will connect a floating photovoltaic plant at the Port of Valencia to the port's medium-voltage grid. The second will link a wave power plant at the Port of Sagunto to the port's medium-voltage network.

The combined project carries a budget exceeding EUR 1.7 million with an eleven-month completion timeline. RENMARINAS DEMOS is funded under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan through European Union Next Generation EU financing, channelled via Spain's Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving.

The initiative forms part of Valenciaport's Net Zero Emissions Plan, through which the authority aims to lead decarbonisation efforts at the ports of Valencia, Sagunto and Gandia via targeted action plans across each sub-sector of the port community. The incorporation of marine renewable energy reinforces the role of Valencia and Sagunto as hubs for applied innovation and sustainability leadership within the European port system.

The project aligns with objectives outlined in the authority's Strategic Plan, positioning the Mediterranean region as a reference point for port electrification and renewable energy infrastructure. Valenciaport is hosting commercial-scale pilot applications of marine energy technologies, supporting application-based research and development activities across the sector.
