Misrata Free Zone received its first container ship on Wednesday, 6 May 2026 as part of a new direct maritime route between China and Libya. The vessel, GUO YUN HAI, operated by COSCO Shipping and measuring nearly 300 meters, officially launched the new service. Libyan authorities frame the call as a step toward strengthening the free zone's role as a regional logistics hub and a gateway to the African hinterland.

The 2026-built GUO YUN HAI arrived with about 1,000 containers, currently being discharged. As part of an operational cycle designed to balance import and export flows, the vessel will reload a similar number of boxes before continuing its voyage. Its prior call was Benghazi Port, where 209 containers were unloaded and around 250 containers were lifted on board.

The route is part of the North Africa Express service, designed to compress transit times by bypassing traditional transshipment hubs. The line is expected to run two sailings per month with a modern fleet. Libyan officials say the direct connection should reduce dependence on intermediary ports between the Far East and Libya, accelerate cargo delivery and lift supply chain efficiency.

The launch fits COSCO's broader push to deepen its Mediterranean reach. Misrata, one of Libya's main deepwater gateways, has drawn rising attention from other global liners. MSC activated an Italy-North Africa string covering Zarzis-Tunisia-Misurata-Tripoli on 4 May. The new China line broadens the free zone's ability to absorb Asia-origin volumes directly, without an intermediate transshipment leg.

The opening lands as tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and the ongoing exposure on the Red Sea corridor force shippers and carriers to reconsider routing on Asia-Mediterranean trades. Authorities signaled that Misrata Free Zone Port will be positioned more strongly as a strategic corridor between Africa and Asia. Cargo volumes and the eventual fleet mix on subsequent calls will determine the service's long-term viability.
