China United Lines (CULines) has re-entered the newbuilding market with an order for four 6,400 TEU containerships. The Shanghai-based intra-Asia carrier has contracted CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding in Guangzhou for the series, with CSSC Trading involved in structuring the deal. The order is the carrier's first since 2022, when it booked a pair of 7,092 TEU vessels.
The new ships will be conventionally fuelled and offer capacity for 1,150 reefer containers. CULines plans to deploy them mainly on intra-Asia services, with the option to extend onto US West Coast, Red Sea, East Africa and Mediterranean trades.
According to Alphaliner, CULines ranks 32nd globally with 26 ships and around 60,000 TEU of capacity. No price or delivery schedule has been disclosed. The latest order follows six ships CULines has already taken from Huangpu Wenchong — four 1,900 TEU and two 2,700 TEU — which have become regular performers across its network.
The deal lands as intra-Asia carriers continue to step up capacity investment, with regional operators leaning toward mid-to-large-tonnage vessels in the 6,000-7,000 TEU bracket as new geopolitical corridors and shifting trade routes reshape demand.
The CULines order also reinforces China's position as the dominant container shipbuilder, in line with Huangpu Wenchong's strategy of deepening its customer base in the mid-tonnage container segment.
