A rudder failure aboard the container vessel KAPPA, transiting the Istanbul Strait, caused the ship to drift toward shore off Sariyer Yenikoy. The vessel ran aground only meters away from the historic yalı waterfront houses.

Police and teams from the Turkish Directorate General of Coastal Safety (KEGM) were dispatched to the scene. The ship was carrying containers and was reportedly inbound from the Black Sea toward Izmit, Kocaeli.

In a statement, KEGM said that after inspection by divers and rescue teams, KAPPA was refloated under the coordination of the Istanbul Vessel Traffic Service Center by tugs KURTARMA-5, KURTARMA-6 and KURTARMA-8. The operation was completed overnight.

Groundings caused by rudder failures on the strait have once again pushed navigational safety in the Turkish Straits to the top of the agenda. The KAPPA incident underlined the critical role of coastal safety response on the high-risk Yenikoy stretch.
