Aluminum supplier Novelis Inc. said employees were safely evacuated on November 20 after another fire broke out at its New York facility. The company, a critical supplier to Ford Motor Co., said the fire is under control and teams are on site to ensure it is fully extinguished. Multiple local fire departments responded, Novelis said in a statement. This fire marks the latest incident at the facility that produces aluminum sheet metal for Ford vehicles, including Ford's best-selling F-150 pickup. A damaging fire broke out in September — halting production at the facility. Ford said production disruptions tied to the fire will reduce its adjusted profit this year by up to $2 billion. From a supply chain perspective, Novelis Inc. is Atlanta, Georgia-based and was established in 2005 as a spinoff of Alcan's rolling business. It was acquired in 2007 by Hindalco Industries (Aditya Birla Group, India) for $6 billion — making it the world's largest producer of flat-rolled aluminum products.

Local media reports indicate heavy black smoke clouds visible rising from the facility's roof, and say the fire originated in the facility's cold mill. Novelis declined to discuss whether the latest fire will impact plans to restart and accelerate production at the facility. Ford is still assessing the impact of the latest fire on November 20. "We are aware of the situation and are working with Novelis to learn more details," a spokesperson said. From a supply chain perspective, the Novelis Oswego facility, located in New York, is the largest aluminum sheet rolling mill in the northern U.S. — and is critical particularly for automotive-grade aluminum production. The Ford F-150 has had an aluminum body since the 2015 model year — a global pioneer in the shift from steel to aluminum bodies. The F-150 has been the best-selling truck in the U.S. for over 40 years, with annual sales of 700,000 to 900,000 units. Ford's Dearborn Truck Plant (Michigan) and Kansas City Assembly Plant are the primary assembly facilities for the F-150.

From a supply chain perspective, the global aluminum industry's main players include Hindalco/Novelis, Hongqiao Group (China), Rusal (Russia), Rio Tinto Aluminium, Alcoa, Norsk Hydro (Norway), Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA, UAE), Aluminum Corporation of China (Chalco), Vedanta Aluminium (India), and Constellium. The primary segment distinction is upstream (bauxite/alumina/primary aluminum) versus downstream (rolled/extruded/cast/recycled). Key product categories include automotive grade aluminum, aerospace grade aluminum, can sheet, plate, foil, and extrusion. Novelis leads globally in recycled-content aluminum — recycling over 80 billion cans annually. Trump 2.0 will raise steel/aluminum tariffs under Section 232 to 25% (previously 50%) in February 2025 — intended to support U.S. aluminum production. Magna International, Constellium, and Aleris (sold to Novelis) are automotive aluminum component suppliers.

From a supply chain perspective, the global automotive market's main OEMs include Toyota, Volkswagen Group, Stellantis, Hyundai-Kia, General Motors, Ford, Honda, Nissan, BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz Group, BYD (China), SAIC (China), Geely (China), Chery, Tata Motors, and Renault. Ford, with annual 2024 revenue of approximately $185 billion and based in Dearborn, Michigan, was founded in 1903 by Henry Ford. The F-Series pickups are a cornerstone of Ford's profit engine — generating over $40 billion in annual revenue from a single vehicle family. Plant fire, supply chain disruption, single-source dependency, and concentration risk are fundamental elements of modern supply chain risk management. The successive fires at Novelis's Oswego facility starkly highlight the resilience challenges in the automotive aluminum supply chain. BCP (Business Continuity Planning), dual-sourcing, geographic diversification, safety stock, scenario planning, and scenario planning are primary tools for OEMs' supply disruption response. In conclusion, Novelis's second fire represents a repeated critical indicator of Ford's aluminum supply vulnerability within two months.

Key Points:
1. Novelis experienced a second fire at its New York facility on November 20.
2. The September fire reduced Ford's adjusted profit by $2 billion.
3. The fire originated in the facility's cold mill — black smoke observed.
4. The Ford F-150 features an aluminum body — the best-selling truck.
5. Novelis, as a Hindalco (Aditya Birla Group) subsidiary, is the global leader in flat-rolled aluminum.
