The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved a global strategy on maritime digitalisation alongside mandatory cybersecurity measures for maritime single windows. The strategy aims to improve safety, efficiency, and operational resilience. The decision was endorsed by the IMO Facilitation Committee (FAL) at its 50th session, held in London from 23 to 27 March 2026.

The strategy promotes interoperability, system standardisation, data sharing, and governance across administrations, industry, and seafarers. Key objectives include streamlining seafarer credential verification, passenger identification, and ship certification, while enhancing navigation safety and environmental performance. The strategy will be reviewed by IMO's Legal, Maritime Safety, and Marine Environment Committees before submission to the 35th IMO Assembly in 2027.

The FAL Committee also approved amendments to the FAL Convention Annex, making cybersecurity measures mandatory for maritime single windows. This step is regarded as a major milestone in protecting digital systems used globally for port and ship formalities. The IMO aims to accelerate the maritime sector's digital transformation while reinforcing resilience against cyber threats.
