U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced on April 9, 2026 that it is expanding the scope of the product authentication pilot program launched in 2025 at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to major U.S. ports. The agency is conducting this work jointly with the Alliance for Gray Market and Counterfeit Abatement (AGMA), which serves as an umbrella organization for brand owners. At the core of the solution lies an authentication technology called GenuScan, offered by True Pedigree. GenuScan activates a portable mobile platform that allows brands to verify their products in real time, enabling officers in the field to complete digital identity verification alongside traditional physical inspection. CBP emphasizes that the program expansion increases enforcement capacity at both airport and seaport points of entry, and enables faster, more reliable information flow with brand owners.

Feedback from the pilot indicates that counterfeit traffic in the global supply chain presents a difficult picture both in terms of volume and the sophistication of methods used. The agency notes that fakes appear not only in luxury retail but also in critical categories such as semiconductors, automotive parts, pharmaceuticals and consumer electronics. Identifying these products as they move through customs channels is becoming increasingly difficult with traditional inspection methods, because counterfeiters are demonstrating considerable technical capability on original packaging, trademarks and documents. Against this backdrop, digital authentication, track-and-trace and mobile solutions that deliver on-the-spot results are moving to the forefront. The GenuScan platform consolidates the security elements defined by brand owners into a single interface, allowing enforcement officers to reach decisions in a short time.

The AGMA One Device that AGMA is providing to CBP is transferred as a donation through the CBP Donations Acceptance Program. This approach lets privately developed authentication tools be integrated into formal customs processes, producing an operational model in which the proprietary security features of different brands are consolidated onto a single mobile device. AGMA notes that this model removes the need for officers to use different devices in the field and shortens inspection times. CBP officials, for their part, point out that the public-private collaboration can be run without generating the “operational friction” classically associated with such partnerships, with processes drawn along clear lines in terms of information security and defined responsibilities.

According to data shared by the agency, CBP seized approximately 79 million counterfeit items during 2025 alone, with a combined manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of roughly USD 7.3 billion. This volume also illustrates an ongoing trend worth monitoring in the area of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Alongside the program expansion, the GenuScan mobile platform is being rolled out in phases at high-volume entry points such as Los Angeles/Long Beach, New York/Newark, Savannah and Miami. Brand owners are sharing the digital signatures defined within their product families with the agency and maintaining a real-time feedback loop. CBP emphasizes that the data architecture of the project does not transfer information to third parties without the brand owner’s consent, and that the model is able to protect privacy, trade secrets and enforcement integrity at the same time. Overall, the program reinforces consumer safety while facilitating legitimate trade, delivering a two-way value proposition.

Key Takeaways:
1. CBP is extending the JFK pilot to major U.S. ports.
2. GenuScan, developed by True Pedigree, delivers real-time authentication via a mobile device.
3. AGMA One Device is donated to the agency through the CBP Donations Acceptance Program.
4. 79 million counterfeit items seized in 2025 carry an MSRP value of roughly USD 7.3 billion.
5. The model brings public-private collaboration into the field without creating “operational friction”.
