FedEx announced it will extend its use of artificial intelligence (AI) to physical assets such as RFID sensors and robotic systems over the coming years. The company already optimizes 100,000 first- and last-mile routes per day with AI and aims to embed AI in more than 50% of its core operational workflows by 2028.
According to data and AI lead Bala Vaidyanathan, RFID sensors are being tested on select customers' packages; the predictive maintenance platform MOBIUS has been deployed across 41 surface operations facilities and has prevented 17,000 hours of potential downtime. The company says the platform delivers $10 million in annual savings.
FedEx will also scale its Berkshire Grey-based autonomous trailer unloading system (Scoop) to thousands of dock doors across more than 20 U.S. hubs. As the Network 2.0 transformation merges Ground and Express, agentic AI will increasingly generate weather-related rerouting recommendations automatically.
