A.P. Moller – Maersk has taken delivery of Tangier Maersk, the first of six mid-size 9,000 TEU vessels in a new series, at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group's yard in Jingjiang, China. Tangier Maersk features a dual-fuel engine capable of operating on methanol and will begin its maiden voyage calling Shanghai before entering Maersk's TP15 service, linking East Asia with the US Gulf Coast via the Panama Canal.
Yangzijiang delivered the vessel three months ahead of schedule. Maersk expects to take delivery of four more ships later this year, with the final vessel scheduled for early 2027. Anda Cristescu, Head of Chartering & Newbuilding at Maersk, said: "We are pleased to take delivery of Tangier Maersk, marking the first of six vessels in this new series," adding it will contribute to fleet renewal and the carrier's long-term decarbonisation goals.
Tangier Maersk's methanol dual-fuel capability is a concrete deployment of Maersk's low-emission shipping strategy; it provides both operational flexibility within volatile bunker fuel chains and a transition path to low-carbon fuels such as green methanol and bio-methanol. By bringing down the average fleet age, the vessels also progressively reduce Maersk's carbon intensity.
