75% of Companies Will Redesign Packaging for Functionality by 2026
RRD's 2024 Packaging & Labels Insight Report reveals how inflation and rising costs are shaping companies' packaging and labeling priorities. As businesses grapple with challenges, they are focusing on functionality, security, and sustainability to stand out in competitive markets and meet customer demands.
\nLisa Pruett, Head of RRD's Packaging & Labels Segment, said: "Integrating functional design and security features into packaging and labels is not merely a trend; it is the foundation for ensuring product integrity and delivering an exceptional user experience."
\nAccording to survey results from more than 300 decision-makers, packaging functionality, material improvements, and sustainable practices are gaining increasing importance. Approximately 75% of packaging respondents and 60% of label respondents plan to make functional design changes—such as durability, size, and opening mechanisms—over the next two years. Material composition changes are also a priority due to inflation and rising raw material costs; 73% of packaging respondents and 70% of label respondents aim to improve their supply strategies.
\nSustainability continues to play a major role; 83% of packaging respondents and 80% of label respondents report making progress toward sustainability goals. These efforts include reducing material waste (69%), increasing recyclability (68%), and lightweighting materials (54%). More than half of packaging respondents prioritize ecological aesthetics to attract environmentally conscious consumers.
\nE-commerce remains a dominant force; 78% of packaging respondents and 79% of label respondents reported increases in e-commerce activities. Over 55% of those designing specialized packaging have seen this rate, representing an 18% increase compared to the prior year. To ensure product safety and customer satisfaction, companies are investing in specialized materials and using customer feedback to refine their designs.
\nIn the Flashback section, RRD's report reflects on what a supply chain trade show looked like in 1949, while also highlighting innovations such as PUMA's high-tech Fulfillment Center that opened in Glendale, Arizona. Additionally, the report notes AI-powered Pickle Robot's $50 million fundraise to transform truck unloading operations, and Gather AI's introduction of Freezer and Cold Storage Inventory Monitoring services.
\nIn conclusion, as consumer expectations rise, both packaging and labels must balance protection, convenience, and brand appeal. This balance is critical to creating genuine connections with consumers.
