Amazon has seized the top spot in quarterly sales for the first time, surpassing Walmart in the fourth quarter of 2024. During this period, Amazon generated revenue of $187.8 billion, while Walmart reported revenue of $180.6 billion. ​


Amazon's achievement stems from the company's strong performance in e-commerce and cloud computing. In particular, Amazon Web Services (AWS) generated revenue of $25 billion with a 17% increase in the first quarter of 2024. Additionally, Amazon's North America sales rose 12% to $86.3 billion, while international revenue climbed 10% to $31.9 billion. The company's net income surged 225% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching $10.4 billion. ​


Walmart, meanwhile, achieved revenue of $180.6 billion with a 4.1% increase during the same period. The company's comparable store sales in the United States grew 4.6%, while global e-commerce sales rose 16%. Walmart's advertising business also experienced a 29% increase. However, Walmart's earnings guidance for the first quarter of 2025 fell short of expectations, raising concerns among investors. ​


Both companies are making substantial investments in logistics and delivery services. Walmart utilizes its 4,700 stores as rapid delivery hubs, offering same-day delivery service through independent drivers via its Spark platform. In this way, in 2024 it delivered 5 billion items on the same day, reaching 93% of U.S. households. Amazon has expanded its delivery network, delivering 5.9 billion packages in 2023 and surpassing competitors such as UPS and FedEx in this area. ​


Both companies face criticism regarding employee working conditions. According to research conducted by Oxfam, half of Amazon and Walmart employees feel constantly monitored in the workplace, a situation that creates pressure for them to work faster. ​


In this competitive environment, Amazon and Walmart continue to make strategic moves to increase their market share. While Amazon maintains its strength in e-commerce and cloud computing, Walmart is expanding its physical store network and rapid delivery services.
