Ukrainian Strike Temporarily Disrupts 2% of Global Oil Supply at Novorossiysk

Ukraine's missile and drone attack on Novorossiysk halts oil loading operations at Russia's Black Sea port; approximately 2% of global supply temporarily disrupted with two major oil piers sustaining damage.

Novorossiysk Port, one of Russia's most critical oil export hubs on the Black Sea coast, temporarily shut down following an extensive missile and drone strike carried out by Ukraine on November 14. According to Reuters, the disruption at the port caused a halt to approximately 2.2 million barrels per day, equivalent to roughly 2% of global oil supply.

The strike, consistent with Ukraine's intensified targeting of Russian oil refineries and energy infrastructure since summer 2025, aims to further undermine Russia's oil export capacity. News of the strike pushed crude oil prices up by more than 2%, reflecting the market's risk perception and sensitivity to supply disruptions.

Scope and damage of the strike

Ukraine's General Staff confirmed that the operation was conducted using Neptune cruise missiles and various long-range maritime and aerial drones. The stated objective was to weaken Russia's military and economic capacity.

The attack resulted in:

  • Two critical piers (1 and 1A) at Sheskharis oil terminal sustained heavy damage.
Pier 1: Services 40,000 DWT tankers
    Pier 1A: Handles 140,000 DWT Suezmax-class vessels

  • The Sierra Leone-flagged Arlan tanker was struck and damaged.

  • A fire broke out at an oil storage facility, but was extinguished shortly thereafter.

  • Infrastructure damage occurred along the coastal line where the pier is located.

  • Three vessel personnel were injured.

  • Drone debris also caused damage to a container terminal and cranes.

Regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported that firefighting and security operations were conducted throughout the night with more than 170 personnel and over 50 vehicles.

Impact on exports and market implications

Via Novorossiysk:

  • In October: 3.22 million tonnes (761,000 barrels per day) of crude oil,

  • Same month: 1.79 million tonnes of petroleum products,

  • January–October period: total of 16.8 million tonnes of petroleum products shipped.

Following the strike:

  • Transneft suspended shipments.

  • Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) resumed shipments after a brief pause following air raid alarms.
November's planned CPC volume: 1.45 million barrels per day

  • NKHP grain terminal continued operations.

This disruption, while weakening Russia's oil production and sales capacity, could also indirectly impact Kazakhstan's exports through CPC.

Ukraine's multi-pronged strike doctrine

On the same night, Ukraine announced strikes on Russia's:

  • Saratov region oil refinery,

  • Engels fuel storage facility

Kyiv is employing long-range drone and missile strikes against energy infrastructure as a strategic pressure tool to undermine Russia's war financing.

Geopolitical implications

The Novorossiysk strike once again exposes the vulnerability of energy security in the Black Sea. The port is particularly:

  • Russian oil,

  • Kazakh oil,

  • CPC volume
critical chokepoint in the region for.

For this reason, the strike's impact extends beyond Russia alone to affect global oil flows and price equilibrium.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Novorossiysk strike temporarily took 2% of global supply offline.

  • Two major piers at Sheskharis terminal sustained heavy damage.

  • The Arlan tanker was struck; three crew members injured.

  • Ukraine also struck a refinery and fuel storage facility that same night.

  • Oil prices rose over 2% following the strike.

  • CPC shipments experienced a brief halt; Transneft suspended operations.
