Toyota's Traigo_i Forklift Wins the German Design Award 2026
Toyota Material Handling Europe has achieved another significant milestone on the international stage with its new generation electric counterbalanced forklift model Toyota Traigo_i, built on lithium-ion technology. The company announced that the model has won the German Design Award 2026 – Excellent Product Design / Industry category. This award marks the second major global design accolade for Traigo_i following its Red Dot Design Award in 2025, positioning the product among the most innovative solutions in industrial design.
Traigo_i is the flagship model of Toyota's new Traigo48 electric forklift series. The design language draws inspiration from iconic elements of Japanese culture, specifically the characteristic lines of the katana sword. The dynamic body contours, flowing cabin design, and modern lines not only present an aesthetic statement but are also ergonomically optimized to enhance operator comfort.
Toyota Material Handling Europe Vice President of Sales and Marketing José Maria Gener described Traigo_i's consecutive two prestigious awards as "strong proof of design and engineering excellence." According to Gener, the model is not merely a powerful, durable, and high-performance forklift; it is a user-centric innovation aimed at increasing work productivity, reducing costs, and elevating the operator experience to the highest level.
Perfect marks from the international design community
The Red Dot Design Award is recognized as one of the world's largest and most influential design competitions. The German Design Award, granted by the German Design Council since 2012, is a prestigious competition that recognizes products that push boundaries in the form–function–user experience trinity. Traigo_i stood out to both juries as a modern industrial solution that combines superior design quality, ergonomics, aesthetic innovation, and technical performance.
Operator-centric design and integrated energy efficiency
Traigo_i distinguishes itself from conventional forklifts in its class through a fully integrated compact lithium-ion battery architecture designed for seamless integration. This design provides both greater interior space and a more comfortable working environment during extended shifts. The cabin features an open-sided design, vibration isolation, and an expanded field of view. A small steering wheel, simplified instrument panel, and optional touchscreen interface make operation intuitive.
Innovative features of the model include:
Integrated Li-ion battery with fast-charge support,
Toyota's SyncoDrive system combining intelligent drive and control technologies,
low vibration and low noise levels through fully floating cabin isolation,
customizable armrests and controls,
optional wide-view panoramic roof and other safety-enhancing solutions.
These components transform Traigo_i from a mere forklift into a highly efficient, ergonomic, and aesthetically refined work platform for modern warehouse operations.
A tangible reflection of Kaizen philosophy
Toyota Material Handling Europe emphasizes that the award is the result of the brand's Kaizen – continuous improvement culture. Traigo_i crystallizes energy efficiency, user ergonomics, and functional design, clearly expressing the brand's vision.
The 2026 awards ceremony for Traigo_i will be held on February 6 as part of Frankfurt's World Design Capital 2026 designation.
