Sean Duffy Confirmed as U.S. Transportation Secretary

The U.S. Senate confirmed former Wisconsin Representative Sean Duffy to lead the Department of Transportation with a vote of 77 to 22. The approval allows Duffy, nominated by President Donald Trump, to head a department that regulates safety in the automotive, aviation, rail, and trucking industries, as well as finances transportation infrastructure projects.

American Trucking Associations (ATA) CEO and President Chris Spear welcomed Duffy's confirmation and noted that he is a steadfast supporter of truckers and the workers who deliver the nation's cargo. Spear said they aim to work with Duffy to modernize infrastructure and strengthen supply chain resilience.

Duffy has been tasked with implementing President Trump's policy objectives, which criticize government overreach and target electric vehicle regulations. The President has ordered an end to electric vehicle (EV) mandates and funding for electric charging stations from the Biden administration.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) also welcomed Duffy's confirmation. OOIDA President Todd Spencer highlighted the importance of the position in advancing small business trucking priorities and said they look forward to working with Duffy on expanding truck parking, combating cargo fraud, and rolling back unnecessary regulations.

Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin supported Duffy's confirmation and expressed hope that he will advance bipartisan major projects like the St. Croix Crossing bridge, which connects Wisconsin and Minnesota while enhancing safety and reducing congestion. Opened in 2017, the bridge replaced a deteriorating structure dating from 1931 that had been experiencing congestion. The project took decades due to discussions surrounding historic preservation, environmental reviews, and development impacts.

Following a mid-air emergency experienced by Boeing in 2024, Duffy stated that the company needs a "tough approach" to get back on track and emphasized that he will not approve additional 737 MAX production until safety improvements are made. He also noted that he will oversee the management of unspent infrastructure funds and that the ongoing safety investigation into Tesla will continue.
