Port Authority of New South Wales Develops New Pilot Ladder Training Facility at Port Kembla

The Port Authority of New South Wales (NSW) has developed a new pilot ladder training facility at Port Kembla. This innovative solution enables maritime professionals and trainees to safely practice climbing a ladder alongside a moving vessel.

\n

\n

In collaboration with Avcon Projects, the port authority has designed a custom-built coastal pilot ladder training facility. The facility features a full nine-metre ladder suspended over shipping containers and includes a step platform to simulate the challenging conditions of boarding a commercial vessel at sea.

Philip Holliday, CEO of Port Authority of NSW, stated, "The safety of our marine operations team is our highest priority, and by investing in this training facility, we are providing our teams and stakeholders with the tools needed to facilitate safe vessel transfers. Not only does this facility position the Port Authority at the forefront of operational excellence, it also delivers significant cost savings by minimising the need to travel to external training facilities."

The Port Kembla and South Coast Port Captain added, "The facility will be used not only by pilots, vessel traffic services operators, and pilot boat crew, but also by those who require ladder training and orientation before boarding or disembarking a vessel. The new ladder training facility will enhance our team's skills and enable safer and more efficient transfers."
