Japanese maritime and logistics conglomerate NYK (Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha) is taking a significant step forward in digitalization and autonomy in maritime transport. The company announced it has placed an order with Shinkai Toyohashi Shipbuilding for a next-generation pure car carrier equipped with AI-enabled autonomous navigation and comprehensive Marine DX (Digital Transformation) systems. The vessel, approximately 200 meters long and 38 meters wide, is scheduled for delivery on 31 March 2026.
The new vessel will serve not merely as a commercial car carrier but also as a test platform for advanced navigation and safety technologies. NYK aims to test the vessel under real operational conditions during regular commercial voyages.
MEGURI2040 and Autonomous Navigation
The vessel's most notable feature is its use of an autonomous navigation system developed under the MEGURI2040 fully autonomous ship programme, led by the Nippon Foundation. The system operates under crew supervision; that is, the captain and navigating officers remain aboard and can manually disable the system if necessary.
The autonomous navigation package employs both AI-based image recognition and automatic radar target analysis technologies. These systems enable the vessel to:
detect surrounding maritime traffic,
assess collision and grounding risks,
plan appropriate evasive maneuvers,
and execute these maneuvers through automatic steering.
NYK emphasizes that the fundamental objective of this approach is to reduce the workload of navigating personnel and enhance safety given the reality that approximately 70% of maritime accidents stem from human error.
Japan Marine Science and Intelligent Route Planning
Japan Marine Science (JMS), operating within the NYK Group, will supply the vessel with Advanced Routing Simulation and Planning software. This software simulates not only the vessel's own movements but also the probable behavior of surrounding vessels.
The system continuously recalculates the vessel's optimal route and speed. The software operates in real time and can be overridden at any moment by navigating officers through manual control. This architecture provides a hybrid operational model between autonomy and human control.
Furuno Electric and Collision Avoidance
Japanese navigation equipment manufacturer Furuno Electric will supply the collision-avoidance support package to be integrated into the vessel. Furuno's system processes data from radar and other sensors to calculate collision risk and, working in conjunction with JMS software, generates the optimal evasion route.
Furuno will also supply the vessel with radar, ECDIS, and other essential navigation equipment, providing a broader Marine DX package. This package serves operational efficiency objectives as well as safety.
Cargo Security and Motion Mitigation
The next-generation car carrier will be equipped with a large-motion mitigation system specifically designed to protect vehicle cargo in adverse weather conditions. This system uses real-time wave radar data and vessel status information to simulate potential rolling and motions; it provides course and speed adjustment recommendations to the captain and autonomous system. In this way, both cargo damage and operational risks are reduced.
Digital Infrastructure and Connectivity
NYK plans to install a shipwide Wi-Fi network on the vessel. This network will be designed to cover areas such as the engine room, decks, and cargo holds where signal is traditionally weak. This infrastructure will enable:
access to digital manuals,
real-time video technical support,
remote medical consultation,
mitigation of signal shadow zones created by the steel hull
