McDonald's Ends Supply Chain Diversity Goals

McDonald's has discontinued its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in its supply chain, announcing that it will cease establishing "representation targets." The decision was disclosed in a letter sent to employees and suppliers on January 6 and shared with the public.

Despite this shift, the company noted that it exceeded its goal of spending 25% of its procurement budget with diverse-owned suppliers three years ahead of schedule. The target, announced in 2021, had aimed to allocate 25% of annual supply chain spending in the U.S. to suppliers owned by women and minorities by 2025.

McDonald's made the decision to end its DEI initiatives following a comprehensive civil rights audit completed last year. In implementing this change, the company cited various factors including shareholder proposals, the 2023 Supreme Court decision striking down affirmative action, and other companies' decisions to reassess their own programs.

While stepping back from its DEI commitment, McDonald's stated it would engage in "more integrated discussions about inclusion in relation to business performance" with its suppliers. However, the company did not provide details on what these discussions would entail.

McDonald's move coincides with a period in which brands across many sectors have retreated from DEI commitments. Last summer, Harley-Davidson eliminated supplier diversity spending targets, while Tractor Supply removed DEI roles and other positions focused on DEI initiatives. The technology sector experienced similar pullbacks, with companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta reassessing their DEI programs. Notably, Meta ended its supplier diversity initiative as part of its broader DEI rollback.

Despite ending its DEI initiatives, McDonald's stated it will continue to share demographic information regarding its board, employees, and suppliers in its annual reports. This decision is viewed as part of the company's effort to maintain transparency in its supply chain practices.
