California's Largest Electric Truck Charging Depot Opens

Prologis, a logistics real estate firm, and Performance Team, the third-party logistics division of A.P. Møller – Maersk A/S, have opened America's largest heavy-duty electric vehicle (EV) charging depot near the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The facility has the capacity to charge 96 electric trucks simultaneously and will serve Performance Team's fleet of 240-mile-range Volvo VNR Electric trucks. The depot was constructed in just five months and is located on Denker Avenue, directly beside the Harbor (110) Freeway in Los Angeles. The facility is five miles away from Interstate 405 and California State Route 91 (SR91).

California is required to phase out diesel truck sales by 2035 and transition to electric trucks, with a further shift to all-electric heavy-duty trucks by 2045. This policy is pushing companies to invest in charging infrastructure and updating the state's electrical grid to accommodate increased demand. However, these improvements take time. For this reason, Prologis built specialized charging infrastructure to rapidly bring the depot online rather than waiting for grid upgrades.

For the Denker charging depot, Prologis partnered with Mainspring Energy to construct a microgrid featuring a small electricity generator and load network that can connect to the grid but operate independently from the local grid. The Prologis Denker microgrid utilizes linear generators with hydrogen readiness capable of 2.75 MW fuel flexibility and 18 MWh of batteries, delivering up to 9 MW of charging capacity. This facility is the third commercial truck EV charging project opened jointly by Prologis Mobility and Performance Team in Southern California.
