Port of Los Angeles Returns to Full Operations Following ONE Henry Hudson Fire

Detailed summary of the electrical fire on the ONE Henry Hudson container vessel at the Port of Los Angeles, including the lifting of terminal closures and the resumption of full-capacity port operations.

Port of Los Angeles announced its return to normal operations following the completion of intensive emergency response efforts carried out throughout the weekend after an electrical fire erupted on ONE Henry Hudson, a container vessel, on Friday evening. The fire occurred at the port's Yusen Terminals facility, and due to critical safety risks, four of six container terminals were temporarily closed.

A port spokesman said Monday morning in a statement to the Journal of Commerce that all terminals were operating at full capacity, with four terminals reopening Saturday morning after closing Friday at midnight. This rapid recovery is being attributed to the coordinated response between port management and fire units.

Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) reported that the fire began on Friday around 6:30 p.m. in the vessel's lower decks. Initial assessments indicated the fire was electrical in nature. The flames spread quickly to lower-level compartments, and failures that occurred during the fire affected the vessel's electrical systems, increasing operational risks.

Due to the complexity of the fire and the potential risk of hazardous cargo aboard the vessel, LAFD conducted response operations both from the shore and from the water. Fire teams were supported by cooling operations from port fire boats; HazMat crews closely monitored air quality due to hazardous materials in specific containers on the vessel. Authorities reported that no chemical leaks or major environmental risks were detected.

After the fire was brought under control, the vessel was moved to a safe anchorage area approximately one mile offshore, near the Angel's Gate lighthouse, to prevent further impact on port operations. Cooling and additional security operations continued throughout the weekend. This strategic move allowed port traffic to be safely reorganized and terminal operations to stabilize rapidly.

Industry experts emphasize that a fire on a single vessel at a major port like Los Angeles can create a domino effect throughout the supply chain. However, in this case, the swift, effective, and procedure-compliant response by port management prevented widespread delays and congestion.

As the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach handle approximately one-third of U.S. foreign trade, any disruption in operations can have direct implications for the national supply chain. For this reason, the fire on Friday night was closely monitored, particularly during a period of increased year-end order volume.

While technical investigations and root-cause analyses related to the fire are expected to be completed in the coming days, authorities report that damage was limited to the vessel's lower decks and no significant physical damage occurred to port infrastructure.

Port of Los Angeles management stated that the rapid response of all teams engaged in combating the fire was the most critical factor enabling the port to return to normal operations in the shortest possible time.

Key Points

  • An electrical fire in the lower deck of ONE Henry Hudson resulted in temporary closures of four terminals.

  • All terminals reopened Saturday morning; as of Monday, the port is operating at full capacity.

  • The vessel was moved one mile offshore to a safe anchorage; cooling and inspection operations continued at sea.

  • HazMat crews continuously monitored air quality due to hazardous materials aboard.

  • No injuries occurred in the incident, and no significant damage to port infrastructure was sustained.

  • Despite the disruption coinciding with year-end peak volume, cascading supply chain effects remained limited.
