Levi Strauss Targets Decarbonization of Supply Chain
Levi Strauss Targets Decarbonization of Supply Chain
Levi Strauss & Co. has announced plans to achieve net zero emissions across its entire supply chain by 2050, strengthening its sustainability commitment in the denim sector. In its first climate transition plan released on October 16, the company outlined targets to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 42% by 2030 and to cut Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 90% by 2025 compared to a 2016 baseline year.
\nLevi's joins other major denim manufacturers such as Diesel and Gap in adopting net zero emissions targets by 2050. Competitors Wrangler and Lee have not established 2050 targets, although they have recently undertaken various initiatives to promote more environmentally friendly denim production.
\nAs part of its climate transition plan, Levi's has committed to using 100% renewable energy across all company operations by 2025 and to reduce freshwater consumption in production processes in regions under high water stress by 50% by next year compared to a 2018 baseline. The company stated that the plan is aligned with the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) framework and is supported by reporting guidelines from the Carbon Disclosure Project and the We Mean Business Coalition.
\nAs an apparel company whose portfolio also includes brands such as Dockers and Beyond Yoga, Levi Strauss & Co. aims to review its climate transition plan at least every three years to maintain its focus on climate risks and opportunities and to ensure alignment with internationally recognized frameworks. In developing the climate transition plan, the company took into account feedback from environmental NGOs such as Ceres and World Resources Institute, as well as from trusted advisors, research institutions, investors, and brands.
\nJeffrey Hogue, the company's sustainability director, said in a statement on the October 16 updates: "Our climate transition plan embodies our commitment to doing our part in combating climate change, reaching our targets, and taking collective action alongside partners in our value chain." Hogue noted that these steps will not only advance our progress toward our net zero climate goal but will also strengthen our business's resilience against the impacts of climate change.
\nIn May, Levi Strauss & Co. announced that it had updated its baseline year for Scope 3 emissions reductions from 2016 to 2022 following the approval of its 2050 net zero target by the Science Based Targets initiative. These developments demonstrate the company's commitment to sustainability and climate targets.
