In the North Sea off the coast of East Yorkshire, a collision between the oil tanker MV Stena Immaculate and the cargo vessel Solong resulted in fires breaking out on both ships. The collision occurred at 09:48 in the morning, and emergency teams were dispatched immediately to the scene.
Stena Immaculate, which was anchored while carrying jet fuel, suffered a fuel leak following the impact from Solong. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a large fireball and thick black smoke at the scene.
As part of rescue operations, 36 crew members were safely evacuated and one person was taken to hospital. Crowley, the operator of Stena Immaculate, confirmed that one of the ship's cargo tanks was damaged and Jet-A1 fuel was leaking.
UK Coast Guard teams deployed a rescue helicopter from Humberside and a fixed-wing aircraft, as well as nearby vessels equipped with fire suppression equipment to the scene. Additionally, rescue boats from Skegness, Bridlington, Mablethorpe and Cleethorpes also participated in the rescue operation.
Concerns are mounting regarding environmental impacts. The jet fuel spilled into the sea could have adverse effects on marine life. Experts are continuing their efforts to assess the extent of the spill and potential damages.
