North America Tariffs Suspended While China Retaliates

President Donald Trump has postponed for 30 days the 25% tariffs planned for Canada and Mexico, delaying their implementation by one week. The decision came shortly after both countries began preparing retaliatory measures. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada would impose a 25% tariff on American goods valued at CA $155 billion (approximately $105.7 billion). Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum instructed her economy minister to implement tariff measures to protect Mexico's interests and vehemently rejected Trump's allegations related to drugs.

This tariff postponement has pulled the North American continent back from the brink of a trade war, at least temporarily. However, a friendly resolution between the United States and China appears to remain elusive. The 10% tariff imposed by the United States on Chinese imports took effect on February 4, prompting China to retaliate. Beijing announced that it would impose 15% tariffs on American goods such as coal and liquefied natural gas, and 10% tariffs on crude oil and agricultural machinery. These tariffs are scheduled to take effect on February 10.

Trump stated his determination to reach an agreement with his Chinese counterpart while warning that stricter measures would follow if a deal cannot be reached. These developments were analyzed by shipping expert Lars Jensen. Jensen said: "For carriers, this is a problematic landscape in terms of supply chain planning. Given the scale of the postponed tariffs, carriers are likely to attempt to move as much cargo as possible between the United States, Mexico, and Canada during the 30-day window."
