Red Sea Crisis: Houthi Retaliatory Operations and Impact on Global Supply Chain
Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen have targeted American and British warships in the Red Sea in retaliation for U.S. and UK airstrikes on Yemen. The action followed air operations by the United States and United Kingdom against Yemen. Ali al-Kahhum, a member of the Houthis' political bureau, and Hussein al-Izzi, deputy foreign minister, stated that the U.S. and UK would face a heavy price for their aggression. Local sources in Yemen reported that American and British warplanes conducted airstrikes on Sanaa, Hudaydah, and Taiz. In recent weeks, the Houthis' actions against commercial vessels in retaliation for Israel's assault on Gaza have prompted numerous shipping companies to suspend their operations in the Red Sea. The Pentagon announced multinational missions called "Maritime Task Force" and "Guardian Sentinel Operation." These attacks in the Red Sea and shipping companies' decisions have increased the likelihood of a new supply chain crisis in the global economy.
