IBIA and INTERCARGO Strengthen Partnership on Marine Fuels

The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) and the International Association of Dry Bulk Shipowners (INTERCARGO) signed a reciprocal membership agreement to foster closer collaboration on fuel quality, safety, and decarbonisation. This initiative aims to strengthen dialogue between shipowners and the marine fuel supply chain.

The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) and the International Association of Dry Bulk Shipowners (INTERCARGO) have signed a reciprocal membership agreement to deepen collaboration in the marine fuels sector.

The new agreement formalises a close working relationship between the two organisations on fuel quality, safety, efficiency and decarbonisation and aims to support the sustainable transformation of maritime shipping.

Objective: Safe, efficient and low-carbon operations

Through this agreement, IBIA and INTERCARGO will gain broader access to each other's areas of expertise, activities and working groups. In doing so, both parties will strengthen dialogue between the fuel supply chain and shipowner communities, thereby supporting the development of safer and more sustainable bunker practices.

The agreement aims particularly to provide more coordinated representation on fuel policies, alternative energy sources and carbon reduction at global platforms such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Information sharing and best practices

The reciprocal membership will offer the parties opportunities for information exchange, technical expertise sharing and dissemination of best practices. Additionally, the technical committees of IBIA and INTERCARGO will establish joint working groups on matters such as fuel quality and safety, standardisation of alternative fuels, fuel sampling and bunkering operations.

Industry bridge: Shipowners and fuel suppliers

The collaboration between IBIA and INTERCARGO also aims to strengthen communication between shipowners and the fuel supply chain. Under this framework, the two organisations will work together on areas such as commercialisation of low and zero-carbon fuels, safe storage and development of bunkering infrastructure.

Moreover, this partnership is also regarded as an important step in reducing fuel-related safety incidents and harmonising international standards on fuel quality.

Statements from leaders

IBIA Executive Director Alexander Prokopakis commented on the collaboration as follows:

"We are delighted to welcome INTERCARGO to the IBIA family. As our sector undergoes transformation with new fuels and technologies, collaboration plays a critical role. This agreement will enable us to work hand in hand to develop safe, sustainable and pragmatic solutions."

INTERCARGO Technical Committee Chairman Dimitris Monioudis said:

"INTERCARGO places great importance on dialogue and collaboration with all stakeholders for a sustainable dry bulk shipping sector. With IBIA as a member, we will gain access to deep technical knowledge on current and future fuel types.
This collaboration will help our members develop safe and pragmatic transition strategies."

Shared vision in the decarbonisation process

In the maritime shipping sector, alternative fuels and new energy technologies are increasingly important as the industry works towards the IMO's 2050 zero-carbon targets. However, gaps in fuel quality, safety and supply chain infrastructure complicate the sector's transformation.

By enabling fuel suppliers (bunker operators) and shipowner communities to work on the same platform, this agreement will contribute to making the transition to decarbonisation safer and more efficient.

According to experts, the IBIA–INTERCARGO partnership can accelerate maritime shipping's transformation by creating synergies in areas such as fuel standardisation, safety management and operational applicability of alternative fuels.

Key Points:
  • IBIA and INTERCARGO have strengthened collaboration by signing a reciprocal membership agreement.

  • Objective: Joint work on fuel quality, safety, emission reduction and decarbonisation processes.

  • The agreement will provide more coordinated representation before the IMO and alignment of policies.

  • The partnership will strengthen communication between shipowners and bunker suppliers.

  • IBIA: "We must develop safe and sustainable solutions for new fuels."

  • INTERCARGO: "Technical knowledge sharing on fuel safety and sustainability is vital."

  • This collaboration is viewed as a significant milestone in the transition to low and zero-carbon fuels in maritime shipping.
