Hamburg Port's Future: Renewal of the Köhlbrand Bridge

The Hamburg Senate has voted in favor of constructing a new bridge during a Hamburg Port session, evaluating options related to the passage of the Köhlbrand bridge. It has been reported that the current Köhlbrand Bridge has reached the end of its operational life and needs to be replaced. The new bridge is intended to provide greater clearance for vessels, allowing ships of current dimensions and potentially somewhat larger sizes to access the southern section of the port. This will eliminate a constraint that previously posed an obstacle and create new opportunities for port development. According to Hamburg Port, the new bridge is planned to open to traffic from 2040 onwards and will replace the current Köhlbrand Bridge. The existing bridge will continue to be used and maintained until the new bridge enters service. In March, Maersk's methanol-powered container ship 'Ane Maersk' arrived at Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg on its first voyage from Asia to Europe.
