Damen Introduces New CF 5000 ICE Ice Class Cargo Vessel
Damen Shipyards Group has unveiled the next-generation ice class cargo vessel Combi Freighter (CF) 5000 ICE platform at the Europort 2025 event held in Rotterdam. As the latest addition to the company's extensive cargo ship portfolio, the CF 5000 ICE is positioned as the first vessel in a new ice class series, featuring a modular and scalable design. Damen notes that this design has been developed to deliver high efficiency in both open ocean and ice-laden waters.
Damen Cargo Vessels Commercial Director Remko Bouma stated that the design process leveraged the experience gained from the existing CF series. Bouma emphasized that the CF 5000 ICE has been developed as a practical and reliable vessel with operator feedback directly integrated into its design. This design, combined with the company's experience in next generation cargo vessels, is specifically optimized for economical ice navigation.
The new CF 5000 ICE has been developed building upon the experience from previously delivered CF 3850 units and the conventional CF 5000 models. Through modest increases in hull length and draught, the vessel's deadweight tonnage has been significantly increased. While these modifications may appear minor, the resulting cargo capacity gains are substantial. Damen has announced that these optimizations will be integrated into future conventional CF 5000 models as well.
The CF 5000 ICE has been designed to comply with Swedish/Finnish Ice Class requirements and can be prepared in a configuration suitable for Finnish flag regulations. The vessel features higher-standard accommodation areas including a sauna and gym facilities. Additionally, the vessel is equipped with a winterisation package enabling operations down to -30°C.
The vessel is equipped with a modern hybrid PTO/PTI system focused on sustainability. The extra power required for ice class operations is provided through this hybrid system rather than the main engine. This allows the vessel to operate under normal conditions with a smaller, more efficient propulsion system, with additional power engaged only when needed. This approach enhances fuel efficiency and reduces carbon emissions.
The CF 5000 ICE design incorporates battery installation options, shore power connectivity, peak shaving, and the capability for full electric propulsion under certain conditions. The ability to operate under full electric power, particularly during port maneuvers or in environmentally sensitive areas, provides a significant sustainability advantage. The vessel is also compatible with low emission biodiesel. Additionally, the vessel is delivered with a ventofoil foundation ready for wind-assisted propulsion, enabling rapid integration of wind-assisted hybrid propulsion systems.
Damen is also integrating Triton IoT connectivity, its proprietary digital solution, into the vessel. Triton analyzes data from onboard sensors to provide operators with regular insights regarding system health, performance, maintenance requirements, and fleet management. The platform is reported to streamline maintenance processes and improve operational efficiency.
Construction of the CF 5000 ICE is expected to commence shortly, with delivery targeted for mid-2027, ready for the winter season. The vessel's construction in Asia, as with other CF class platforms, provides cost advantages. Post-delivery support will be provided by the Damen Cargo Vessels Aftersales & Service Team. This Netherlands-based team works in close coordination with fleet operators to manage warranty processes, provide technical support, and resolve operational issues rapidly.
The new CF 5000 ICE presents an economical, sustainable, and operationally powerful platform for modern ice operations, offering a significant alternative for cargo shipping companies operating in northern regions.
