Apptronik and Jabil Partnership: Manufacturing Apollo Humanoid Robots

Apptronik, an Austin-based robot manufacturer, has reached an agreement with supply chain giant Jabil to collaborate on the manufacturing and testing of Apollo humanoid robots. The partnership aims to accelerate the integration of humanoid robots into manufacturing processes and create a more efficient work environment in factories.

Apollo robots will be tested in real-world conditions at Jabil's facilities, performing simple and repetitive tasks such as inspection, sorting, line-side delivery, and fixture placement. This is expected to free up human workers to focus on more creative and cognitively demanding projects. If the tests prove successful, Jabil will begin manufacturing Apollo robots, enabling them to contribute to their own production processes.

Apptronik was founded in 2016 as a laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin and signed an agreement with NASA in 2022 to develop humanoid robots. The company's first humanoid robot, Apollo, launched in August 2023. Apptronik CEO Jeff Cardenas has stated that a humanoid robot must be able to fit into any space where a human can fit and operate all the tools that humans use. This approach facilitates the integration of robots into a world designed for people.

This partnership marks Apptronik's second initiative to integrate humanoid robots into factory environments. Following an agreement with Mercedes-Benz in March 2024, Apollo robots are planned to be tested on simple tasks at the company's production lines. Additionally, BMW successfully tested humanoid robots from Figure, a California-based robot manufacturer, at its Spartanburg facility in South Carolina in June 2024. In that trial, Figure 02 robots successfully placed sheet metal components mounted as parts of a chassis or a vehicle's base frame during a multi-week pilot program.

The partnership between Apptronik and Jabil is seen as a significant step in integrating humanoid robots into manufacturing processes. These robots are expected to take on repetitive and simple tasks, allowing human workers to focus on more complex and creative work. If the tests succeed, Jabil will undertake production of Apollo robots, enabling them to contribute to their own manufacturing processes.

Key Takeaways:
  • Apptronik is partnering with Jabil to plan manufacturing and testing of Apollo humanoid robots.

  • Apollo robots will perform simple and repetitive tasks such as inspection, sorting, line-side delivery, and fixture placement.

  • Following successful tests, Jabil will begin manufacturing Apollo robots and they will contribute to their own production processes.

  • Apptronik previously made a similar agreement with Mercedes-Benz, and BMW successfully tested Figure robots in its factory.

  • This partnership is viewed as a significant step in integrating humanoid robots into manufacturing processes.
