DP World Launches Innovative Intermodal Service for Vehicle Transport from Mexico to the U.S.

DP World is launching a new intermodal rail service to transport finished vehicles from Mexico to the U.S. and Canada, aimed at alleviating capacity constraints in North American Ro-Ro and double-stack rail operations. The Dubai-based logistics provider is offering a first-of-its-kind solution using racking systems to transport vehicles in 53-foot intermodal containers. While traditional 40-foot containers can accommodate a maximum of four vehicles, these new 53-foot containers have a capacity of up to six vehicles.

The new service will load finished vehicles directly into containers at designated "loading areas" near manufacturing facilities or production centers in Mexico. The containers are then transported by truck to intermodal rail ramps and shipped by rail to destinations such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, and Toronto. At the destination, containers are picked up from the rail ramp and transferred to designated areas, from where vehicles are dispatched to dealers. Door-to-door transit times vary between 8 and 14 days depending on the route. In 2024, the new service is expected to facilitate the transport of an additional 30,000 finished vehicles among trading partners.

DP World notes that Mexico's growing production sector, particularly in the automotive industry, and the 2020 United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), enabled Mexico to surpass China and become the U.S.'s largest trading partner in 2023.
