World's Largest Car Carrier Delivered in China — 10,800 CEU Glovis Leader for HMM and Hyundai Glovis
China has delivered the world's largest car carrier — the 10,800 CEU (car equivalent units) Glovis Leader — built by Guangzhou Shipyard International under China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and handed over in Guangzhou. The vessel will be owned by HMM and operated by Hyundai Glovis.
Specifications set a new reference point for the segment. Glovis Leader measures 230 metres in length and 40 metres in width, with a 10.5 m design draft and a 19-knot service speed. Its 14 vehicle decks are configured to carry electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel-cell cars and heavy trucks simultaneously.
A dual-fuel engine running on LNG and conventional fuel meets IMO Tier III emissions standards. Energy-saving features — optimized hull, waste heat recovery and shore power capability — come as standard. A shaft generator produces electricity while sailing, cutting fuel consumption.
Lee Kyoo-bok, CEO of Hyundai Glovis, said the vessel is “expected to set a new benchmark for global automobile transport.” The delivery underscores China's rising strength in high-value shipbuilding after a string of record-breaking PCTC deliveries; analysts say the trend also supports the broader push to more efficient, lower-emission shipping.
