Smart glasses are back on the agenda — but this time they are passing through the warehouse floor before reaching consumers. When Google Glass launched in 2013, it failed in the consumer market and was shelved within two years amid usability flaws, an unattractive design, privacy concerns and a high price tag.

Component costs have since dropped, designs are sleeker and AI-powered vision overlays product and location data on the operator's view. In industrial use, pick-by-vision is reducing picking errors, freeing hands and shortening training time. Devices from Vuzix, Realwear and Meta's Ray-Ban line are already in production environments.

Operations managers report that younger workers' rapid adoption has pulled older colleagues along — but the productivity gain materializes only when workflows are built around the device rather than bolted on. When mis-deployed, the glasses sit on top of handheld terminals and add fatigue rather than removing it.

For supply chains the shift signals the start of a wave from handhelds to wearables. Because real-time WMS integration is the operative requirement, investment lines extend beyond hardware into integration and training. Pilot deployments report productivity gains in the 15-25% range.

Consumer rollout is expected to accelerate in 2027-2028. Devices maturing in the warehouse today are returning valuable field data on battery life, thermal management and UI — lowering the failure risk of the consumer wave.
