The Port of Long Beach (POLB) has awarded a US$ 5.5 million contract to Sully-Miller Contracting for improvements to its heavy haul route infrastructure. Construction is expected to begin in May 2026 and be completed in early 2027. The project will widen and realign the primary corridor connecting port operations to Anaheim Street.

The improvements are designed to eliminate a pinch point along the existing route that constrains the movement of oversized loads. Port engineers consulted specialist oversized load trucking companies during the design phase to ensure operator needs were captured; the input informed the final design specifications ahead of the competitive bidding process. The Heavy Haul Route improvements are being coordinated with the larger Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility project.

POLB CEO Dr Noel Hacegaba described the project as strengthening the port's capacity to handle transformative cargo including transformers, turbine blades, prefabricated structures and other large equipment categories. Port Intermodal Operations Coordinator Kristy McFarland noted that oversized permit volumes are expected to grow in coming years, driven by accelerating investment in renewable energy and electric transportation infrastructure.
