The Terminal Industry Committee 4.0 (TIC4.0) is urging ports and terminals to adopt a new information model to improve interoperability and reduce supply chain costs. The call follows BSI's publication of PAS 4000. TIC4.0 said the specification establishes a common semantic framework to harmonise how operational data is structured and exchanged across ports and logistics hubs.

The standard has been sponsored by TIC4.0 and published through BSI's PAS process. The organisation noted that global trade has long depended on technical standards. For example, ISO 668, first issued in 1968, defines the dimensions and specifications for Series 1 freight containers, enabling global stackability and transferability. Other standards, including ISO 23412 for temperature-controlled delivery services in land transport, support consistency in specialised logistics segments.

According to TIC4.0, increasing reliance on digital systems makes common data structures essential for the wider adoption of APIs, data flows, and automated decision-support mechanisms. PAS 4000 has the potential to reduce integration costs in port operations, accelerate cross-system data exchange, and scale digital twin applications. The standard aims to bring a broad spectrum of stakeholders — from terminal operators to technology vendors — together under a common language.
