Mersin International Port (MIP) announced that it will launch Türkiye's first fully automated container terminal. The port, operated by a joint venture of PSA International, IFM Investors, and Akfen Holding, equipped its new facility known as East Med Hub 2 (EMH2) with automated technology. The facility will set a new standard for container handling efficiency in the Eastern Mediterranean basin.
At the EMH2 site, 4 STS cranes and 14 fully automated aRMG (automated Rail-Mounted Gantry) cranes were deployed. These automated cranes will operate in container stacking areas without human intervention, significantly increasing operational efficiency. The automation system offers low fuel consumption, reduced carbon footprint, and higher safety standards. Previously, no container terminal in Türkiye had implemented fully automated aRMG deployment at this scale.
PSA International executives announced that the EMH2 investment will strengthen Mersin's position as a transit hub in the Eastern Mediterranean. Growth in Türkiye's foreign trade volume and increasing regional transit demand made automation-based capacity expansion necessary. The new terminal will offer an efficient transfer point for large vessels using the Suez Canal, while also providing faster and more reliable service for Turkish exporters. Akfen Holding stated that the project will set an example in the modernisation of Türkiye's port infrastructure.
