Ocean Network Express (ONE) has signed a $1.2 billion deal with HD Hyundai for six new container ships. Each vessel will have a capacity of 15,900 TEU, be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), and will be delivered between November 2028 and September 2029.

The agreement reinforces the continuing dominance of LNG as the fuel of choice for new generation vessels in container shipping. Vessel operators are increasingly turning to alternative fuel technologies to meet environmental regulations and emission reduction targets. HD Hyundai, one of South Korea's leading shipbuilders, is consolidating its expertise in LNG-powered ship construction.

ONE, the container shipping company formed through a partnership between Japanese maritime giants NYK Line, MOL, and K Line, is making significant investments in fleet modernization. The new vessels will enhance the company's operational efficiency across its global network and strengthen compliance with rising environmental standards.

Industry-wide, LNG continues to emerge as the transition fuel of choice despite ongoing debates about methane slip and long-term sustainability. Particularly in line with IMO 2030 and 2050 carbon reduction targets, liner operators favor LNG due to existing infrastructure and technology maturity.

While financial details and technical specifications of the vessels have not been fully disclosed, the 15,900-TEU ships are designed for the mid-size segment and are expected to be deployed on global mainline routes and regional services. The delivery schedule between 2028-2029 will play a significant role in the supply-demand balance of the container market.
