Theft has become a nightmare for retail giants, emerging as a major source of concern. From everyday items to large-scale heists orchestrated by organized crime, various forms of theft are creating a serious problem in a sector already struggling with supply chain disruptions and store inventory challenges.

As a concrete example of this issue, Dollar Tree attributed the drop in gross profit margin from 32.7% in 2022 to 29.8% in the last quarter to "shrinkage." Following this, Dollar Tree CEO Richard Dreiling and CFO Jeffrey Davis announced they would implement certain measures to reduce theft, including moving specific products to checkout lanes and discounting items that are frequently stolen in some stores.

This problem affects not only customers but also a retail supply chain already wrestling with complexity and recurring disruptions. John Harmon, Technology Research Director at Coresight Research, states: "Retailers are forced to place more reorders to compensate for losses due to theft, adding further volatility to supply chains that have not fully recovered from the pandemic." Target also reported facing similar challenges, announcing it expects to lose half a billion dollars due to rising theft. The retailer even closed some stores, citing the threat that theft and organized retail crime pose to employee and customer safety.

Theft is a growing concern, with its impact on retailers' operations and supply chains increasing by the day. However, determining the full magnitude of this problem can be difficult, as some theft incidents may go unreported.

A range of measures are being proposed to prevent retail theft, including deploying artificial intelligence-powered computer vision systems, securing frequently stolen items, and installing physical barriers.
