MSC Fleet Surpasses 7 Million TEU Milestone
MSC Fleet Surpasses 7 Million TEU Milestone
The world's leading container shipping operator Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC) has reached a new industry milestone with its fleet formally surpassing the 7 million TEU threshold. According to the latest data from Alphaliner, MSC's total capacity now stands at 7,002,757 TEU. This figure represents the outcome of an aggressive expansion strategy that MSC has pursued over the past decade through both organic growth and secondhand vessel investments.
MSC's current fleet size outpaces all of the major shipping alliances competing against it. For instance, the Gemini Cooperation initiative formed by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd has a combined capacity that lags behind MSC's existing fleet. Similarly, the combined fleet capacity of Asian carriers Yang Ming, HMM, and ONE, which make up the Premier Alliance, falls short of MSC's position.
This competitive lead has widened in particular due to MSC's purchase of nearly 400 secondhand vessels in the 2020s, coupled with the creation of a massive new order book. The company's order book still exceeds 2 million TEU, meaning MSC is positioned to further widen the gap with its competitors in the coming years.
The final step that pushed MSC across the 7 million TEU threshold was the addition of the Newnew Star 2, a 3,534 TEU capacity vessel built in 2007, acquired from Chinese operator Hainan Yangpu Newnew Shipping. Alphaliner reports that the vessel will be deployed under the MSC Rabat IV designation.
MSC's rapid growth has positioned Switzerland among the world's top 10 ship-owning nations. Despite being landlocked, Switzerland has climbed to 9th place in VesselsValue's global ship ownership rankings thanks to MSC's container and cruise vessel fleets.
Sources of Growth: Newbuild and Secondhand Strategy
Between 2015 and 2025, MSC tripled its capacity. The key pillars of this growth can be summarized as follows:
Massive newbuild programs (numerous 24,000+ TEU megamax-class vessels)
Aggressive purchases in the secondhand market
Operational flexibility and expansion of global port presence
Vertical integration strategy (terminal investments, logistics companies, intermodal operations)
This rapid expansion enabled MSC to overtake Maersk in early 2022 and reclaim container shipping leadership after 25 years. At the current juncture, no other carrier appears positioned to surpass MSC.
Sector Impact
MSC's massive fleet scale:
is reshaping capacity competition,
is influencing power dynamics in freight markets,
is changing vessel deployment strategies on global routes,
is forcing other carriers to reconsider their alliance arrangements.
MSC's ability to operate outside alliances is made possible by the flexibility its scale provides—positioning the company in a unique position within the industry.
Key Takeaways:
MSC's fleet of 7,002,757 TEU represents an industry first.
Its order book stands above 2 million TEU, meaning growth will continue.
MSC's fleet is larger than the combined capacity of Gemini Cooperation and Premier Alliance.
The company acquired approximately 400 secondhand vessels in the 2020s.
Switzerland ranks 9th in global ship ownership rankings thanks to MSC.
MSC's secondhand acquisitions and newbuild programs are reshaping power dynamics across the sector.
