Turning Point in North American Trucking: The Future of Demand and Spot Rates

A survey conducted in the final quarter of 2023 revealed that the majority of truck owner-operators and small fleets believe current truck load demand has reached its bottom. According to research by Truckstop and Bloomberg Intelligence, the worst days for North America's truck load spot market may be near.

The survey included 148 participants operating across various transport modes, with 52% of respondents operating just a single truck. There appears to be a consensus that demand challenges and spot rates have hit their floor. While 68% of participants reported low volumes, 23% reported that loads remained flat. Additionally, 14% of carriers indicated a likelihood of purchasing additional trucks within the next six months. Spot rates, excluding fuel surcharges, showed an average decline of 14%, with 46% of participants predicting rates will remain flat over the next 3-6 months. Economic uncertainty and adverse conditions in the sector are causing many owner-operators to feel uncertain about their situation over the coming six months.
