Red Sea Houthi Attack: Vessel Tutor Sunk

Recent developments in the Red Sea have drawn international attention as Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen escalate attacks on maritime commerce. On June 13, 2024, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Seri posted images on social media showing that the vessel Tutor, flying a Liberian flag and operated by a Greek company, had been targeted and successfully sunk. Seri stated that the attack was carried out on the grounds that the vessel violated the decision to ban access to Israeli ports.

In the images, clear evidence of attacks by two armed unmanned maritime vehicles on the vessel Tutor's main deck and midship section is visible. The severe damage sustained by the vessel confirmed reports that the ship sank on June 18, 2024. Following the attack, Houthi forces made threats of larger strikes to come, using the phrases "A bigger one is coming, we have more."

\n

Since October 31, 2023, the Houthi movement in Yemen has conducted raids against commercial vessels belonging to Israeli companies off the Yemeni coast in response to Israeli military operations in Gaza. During this period, Houthi forces have seized numerous commercial vessels and launched attacks on others using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and missiles. These attacks have significantly disrupted maritime commerce in the Red Sea, prompting numerous shipping companies to suspend operations.

In response to international criticism, the United States announced on December 18, 2023, the formation of a multinational maritime task force involving a coalition of nations, named "Operation Guardian of Prosperity," aimed at reducing threats posed by Houthi forces to maritime commerce and ensuring the security of global shipping lanes. However, following U.S. and British airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, Houthi forces announced they would target all vessels from these countries.

This escalating tension in the Red Sea jeopardizes maritime trade routes in the region while creating potential risks that could negatively impact international commerce and the global economy. The continuously increasing attacks by Houthi forces underscore once again the importance of international cooperation and effective naval operations in securing maritime safety.
