Engineers from Johns Hopkins University have launched an "urgent assessment" of bridges across the United States, particularly those spanning major ports. The assessment was initiated due to concerns that the probability of additional ship strikes—similar to the recent disaster in Baltimore—remains high. The research team plans to publish its initial findings this summer. With support from a National Science Foundation Rapid Response Research grant and numerous students, they aim to update risk assessment models for bridges.


Engineer Michael Shields noted that these bridges were not built to accommodate the increasing size and number of large cargo vessels, emphasizing that the collapse of the Key Bridge served as a wake-up call. Using global shipping data, the research team will develop modern risk models to determine whether critical bridges in the United States could be destroyed following a major ship strike. 


Preliminary findings indicate that existing bridges are not resilient to these new conditions, given the rapid growth of mega container vessels and the increase in global shipping traffic.
